This training in Mexico includes a PADI Divemaster combined to a specific training in research techniques to start your career in marine conservation. This project is also part of the RealStep training courses called careers, mixing theoretical learning before the project, practical training on the ground and real support to find a job in an international NGO.
The Mexican coasts will be your place of immersion for this extraordinary training, in order to know and better understand how to protect the marine world. The base is in the heart of the Caribbean coast, in the Yutucan peninsula, only a few meters from the beach.
The marine ecosystem is particularly rich, Mexican waters are home to a wide variety of species. The reefs are numerous, the mangrove forest extensive, representing an exciting object of study, which explains the presence of many conservation and marine research organizations in the area. It is an ideal place to work in the protection of the environment!
Like all of our training courses for working in the environment abroad, this project in Mexico allows you to benefit from complete learning while contributing to the preservation of the region’s ecosystems.
This vocational training program is part of the so-called “career” projects. In addition to the mission that you carry out on site, it allows you to benefit from real support, and to access the position of project coordinator in 6 months. Here you combine theoretical training with practical learning, with online modules to be completed after the end of the mission. At the end of the program, you obtain an international certification recognized and issued by the University of Richmond, in the United States.
The supervision is therefore present upstream, on site but also downstream of the project. Successful participants will have access to a platform of job offers in NGOs, to which they will be eligible thanks to their professional training.

In Mexico, you will live with members of our partner NGO and undergo a comprehensive training program to work in environmental protection. The objective is to develop your skills, such as those of diving, as well as your knowledge in marine biology and the conservation of this ecosystem.
The theoretical learning from which you benefit upstream will be put into practice on site by carrying out data collection, to contribute to the studies and research of the center alongside specialists. Your object of study is in particular the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, known as the second largest barrier reef in the world.
The local team entrusts you with various responsibilities in order to best develop professional skills, such as leadership, which is assessed each week by a mentor who follows you throughout the training. This is a professional reference that you can mention at the end of the program. Also get exclusive training in team management and leadership.
The impact of the research conducted by the center is national in scope, due to the various partnerships with local NGOs. In fact, our partner organization communicates the results of the studies to several governmental organizations such as the National Fisheries Ministry of Mexico, local and national universities, local fishing cooperatives, among others. Participants have a real impact on the environment, which is both positive and lasting.
Workdays are fast-paced, and can be tiring and long, but extremely rewarding.
This mission includes a unique training on coral reef restoration. More specifically, it is the cloning of coral through the fragmentation, installation, monitoring and evaluation of marine coral nurseries.
The different missions and their frequency depend on the needs of the structure as well as the weather conditions.
A training day can for example include a diving session, studies and laboratory work, basic training, beach cleaning or days with the local community. Every evening there is a debrief with all the team members and participants, followed by dinner and some free time where you can watch the sunset over the beach while sharing your experiences.
Scuba diving is an important part of marine conservation training in Mexico, so improving skills in this area is equally important. Non-divers, everything is planned! The local organization provides the necessary training to be eventually certified PADI Divemaster.
My experience with RealStep Mexico has been incredible. I am so happy I decided to take on the full 6 month program and complete my DM. My instructor, Clau, was amazing. I never felt unsafe and I knew she believed in me and prepared me the best she could. I am such a more confident diver than when I showed up. Kayla ran an amazing science program, I learned so much about ocean conservation, target species, and how I was helping everyday. AGRRA monitoring and working in the CRIP coral lab was an awesome experience that I will remember forever. I don’t have anything bad to say about Mexico. The staff team communicates well with each other and Miguel is a great PM from where I stand. The other volunteers were amazing. I’ve made friendships that I know will last forever. Thank you to Mexico Base! – participant

The accompaniment is therefore present upstream, on site but also downstream of the project. During the course of the mission, you will also have a remote project to carry out: you will have to solve a problem with other partner organizations in marine conservation, environment, animal protection... A coach will follow you and support you to help you in the best possible way in the resolution of these problems, and at the end of the project you will have access to a platform of job offers in NGOs, to which you will be eligible thanks to your professional training.
Remote projects included in professional training will be carried out AFTER having carried out the mission in the field.
If your training lasts 4-11 weeks, you will work on a remote project for a period of 4 weeks after completing the field assignment.
If your training lasts 12 weeks or more, you will work on 2 remote projects for a duration of 8 weeks after completing the field mission.

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.
Participants are accommodated in shared rooms. The accommodation has a common kitchen, a work space and a living space, the facilities are basic. Bottled water is available for cooking and drinking and all the staff share the tasks (cleaning, cooking...). The curfew is at 11pm every day.
The first 3 months, meals are included and the following 3 months, they are at the expense of the participants.
It is up to the participants to prepare breakfast using the cereals, breads and eggs available according to the season. A local cook takes care of preparing dinners and lunches when the volunteers are working, but on weekends they have to take care of it. Dishes are vegetarian, except about once a week when meat is available. The site is close to local restaurants, an option at the participants' expense on weekends. Restaurants and supermarkets are within easy walking distance from the base.
Communication
Communication from people on other continents is limited, tell your loved ones! Cell phone/cell phone reception is available on the base, but is very limited. It is possible to purchase a Mexican SIM card and phone credit at the airport which can be used with your unlocked cell phone. You can also buy a pocket WIFI device that can then be topped up with mobile internet.
To register you will be asked:
- The registration form to be completed and returned to info@freepackers.com.
- A copy of the passport.
For Europeans and Canadians, no visa is required. You just need to have a passport, which must be valid for at least the duration of your stay. Maximum length of stay: 180 days.
