Program description

Jaipur is one of the largest cities in India, with 3.3 million inhabitants. The migration of people from rural to urban areas in India leaves many domestic animals in difficult conditions, abandoned and deprived of food.

The animal hospital, registered as an NGO in India, has around 15-20 full time staff, an ambulance and 2 cars. The objectives are clear: to rescue injured or abandoned animals, to provide them with care and to find foster families for them.

The animal hospital is based in a peaceful and protected garden. It is a true refuge for animals and works like a veterinary hospital. They welcome any animal in need of a safe and comfortable home. As part of this veterinary internship, you will have the opportunity to work on improving the living conditions of these vulnerable animals.

The Role of Interns

  • Help with the daily activities of the hospital.
  • Dress and clean wounds.
  • Shadow and assist the veterinarians on their rounds, observe the care.
  • Carry out regular health checks on the animals, and report any problems observed to the staff.
  • Take care of the animals’ nutrition and diet.
  • Ensure that sick animals are fed and hydrated properly.
  • Wash the animals, clean the cages, change the water.
  • Provide comfort and special care to mistreated animals.

Timetable of Interns

The veterinary hospital is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., so trainees will have to be flexible on their schedule, which will be established according to the needs of the staff on site and the workload. Most of the time, volunteers work from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Places are limited to 5-6 interns and volunteers on the project at a time.

Since 2016, Freepackers has sent a number of veterinary students to volunteer with animals for their compulsory internship abroad. The veterinary internship in Jaipur is among the internships accepted by international veterinary schools such as Maisons Alfort.
