Program description

If you’re wondering how to find a medical internship, we have a solution.

As part of this project, you may work in two different hospitals, depending on availability. One is located in the Moshi region of Tanzania. This is a District Designated Hospital (DDH) based in Singa village, Kibosho East Division. The hospital has ten departments: men, women, pediatrics, maternity, ante-natal, post-natal, post-surgical, dental…

The second hospital is located in Moshi. It is a district hospital that treats about 150 patients per day. The site has four core departments: surgery, gynaecology, pediatrics and outpatient services. Interns may work in any department. Women and children under the age of five are admitted and treated free of charge at the hospital.

Like all of our nursing and medical internship programs abroad, this project in Tanzania allows students to gain university credits while acquiring field experience and contributing to the UN’s goal of universal access to health care.

With this course you will :

Feel part of the community and experience the hospitality and culture of this friendly community.

Assist and gain valuable experience in providing primary medical care.

Provide necessary health care and education to disadvantaged children and communities.

Contribute to the awareness and reduction of the incidence of epidemic diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria.

Train local volunteers in a vital and sustainable home care program.

Be part of a rewarding and sustainable project.

Intern assignment:

Participants’ tasks will depend on their experience, interests, and the most important need at the time. Below you will find different areas where volunteers are needed to help:

Outpatient Department : Receiving patients, registering patients, checking vital signs, assisting physicians with patient histories and treatment administration, assisting in the lab, pharmacy, emergency department and conducting clinics on HIV, diabetes, etc.

Surgical Department: Prepare patients for major and minor surgeries, assist in the operating rooms during surgeries, follow up with patients on the wards after surgeries, morning rounds with doctors and nurses.

Department of Gynaecology: Assisting in prenatal clinics, assisting with deliveries and C-sections, assisting in postnatal clinics, doing morning rounds with doctors and nurses.

Department of Pediatrics: Assistance with treatments and vaccinations for children. Assist in the pediatric wards, doing morning rounds with the doctors and nurses.

HIV Care and Treatment: Here, trainees provide counselling and check-ups for people living with HIV.

Community health services: Volunteers can organise preventative workshops in villages if sufficient funds are raised.

You will work a full day between 8:30am and 4pm, including a lunch break. Each day can offer a new experience.

Monday to Friday:

7am : Breakfast

7:20 a.m.: Departure for the hospital

8:30 a.m.: Start of work at the facility

1:00-1:30 pm: Lunch at the hospital if it’s a long day

2pm-4pm: You will take a bus back to the accommodation if it is a short day, otherwise you will continue working

4pm : Departure from the hospital

6pm : Dinner

Saturdays and Sundays are free days.

Please note that, from time to time, unavoidable changes may be made to projects. These changes may be caused by weather conditions, conservation priorities, material supply, or because ongoing projects have progressed faster or slower than originally planned. We ask you to accept the changes (we are sure you will appreciate the replacement projects as well).

Evenings are free and can be spent relaxing in the volunteer house, reading, playing games and meeting other participants. The project coordinators will help you organise day or weekend trips if you wish.
