Program description

In Cuzco, we work with 4 small partner hospitals that are mainly day care centers to allow you to do a medical internship. Each establishment has about ten beds for specific cases, and about twenty local health care personnel including doctors and nurses. The total capacity of students in Peru is 15 at a time, distributed among the different host institutions and departments (mainly general medicine).

The services that are particularly required of trainees are maternity (midwives), rehabilitation (physiotherapists) and nutritionists (minimum requirement: intermediate level in Spanish, minimum duration 6 weeks).

Like all of our nursing and medical internship programs abroad, this project in Peru allows students to gain university credits while acquiring field experience and contributing to the UN’s goal of universal access to health care.

Role of interns in Peru

Interns are supervised throughout their stay by a project manager, and then by a supervisor on site.

The main role of the interns is to assist the care staff, to accompany them in their daily tasks and to help them during busy periods. As there are often more patients than staff available, the need for staff is constant and the contribution of international students is valuable throughout the year.

Doing a medical internship like this one in Peru, you can expect to:

– Assist caregivers in their daily tasks.

– Contribute to each patient’s daily medical report.

– Participate in the distribution of meals.

– Implement diets for patients.

The hospital does not have state-of-the-art equipment, and staff resources are also limited. Doing a medical internship abroad does not mean working alone. Interns will always be paired with an on-site health care professional.

The local team will organise cultural activities on holidays.
