Program description

Ireland has rich ecosystems, including a variety of biodiversity, which you can discover with this environmental internship. On the organic farm in Cloncannon, there are bees, cows, free-range organic chickens and pigs. The plant species are also varied, ranging from vegetables to fruits. You will have the opportunity to connect with the landscape or even the history of the city, the geology or the farm animals… You will be able to make many connections!

Regular visits are organised at the farm, which is very active and opens its doors to the public during the week. Schools, groups of seniors and farmers come to the farm to visit or to benefit from educational activities. Throughout the year, a team welcomes these visitors and ensures the smooth running of the operation.

As with all of our environmental internship programs, the Organic Farm Project in Ireland provides an opportunity to make a real impact on the region in a sustainable way, while completing your placement year.

Volunteer Work:

Expect 5 to 7 hours of work per day, 5 days a week. We expect our participants in the environmental association course to be proactive on the project, to take initiative and to be autonomous. Working on a farm also includes a significant amount of time spent working outdoors, regardless of weather conditions. Part of the expected work depends on the season; in the summer, the trainees’ tasks will be more horticultural (weeding, harvesting fruits and vegetables). In winter, the activities are more focused on the maintenance of the farm.

Work may include:

  • Animal care (feeding, cleaning, etc.)
  • Weed control
  • Planting
  • Harvest
  • Seedlings
  • Composting
  • General maintenance work
  • Assistance in the preparation of public events

This is an opportunity for participants to gain university credits in an environmental association while benefiting from field experience, which will provide them with in-depth knowledge in sustainable development!

The charity shops we work with in Ireland are run by the Irish Cancer Society, a national charity dedicated to researching and improving the lives of people affected by cancer. Income from charity shops goes directly to the Society, which relies on the time of dedicated local volunteers to keep running. The Irish Cancer Society has over 20 shops across the country. The money raised goes towards research, information and raising awareness in the fight against cancer.

As with all our environmental internships social, the NGO placement in Ireland gives you the chance to make a real impact on the region in a sustainable way, as well as gain real work experience, resulting in a very rewarding year.

Volunteer work :

The project is managed locally by a salaried coordinator and a dedicated team of volunteers who run the sorting centre and shops and go on home visits, helping the most disadvantaged people in the region.

You should expect to work around 30 hours a week. We expect our trainees to be proactive about the project, to take the initiative and to be self-reliant. Working in a charity business means being flexible in terms of tasks and working hours - we adapt to the needs of the associations, not the other way round.

The work may include :

  • Taking inventory management
  • Tidying, sorting, shelving
  • Welcoming customers
  • Receiving donations (clothes, objects, etc.)
  • Home visits / clothing distribution

It's an opportunity for participants to make the most out of their placement with a charity organisation in an English-speaking environment, while benefiting from field experience that will give them in-depth knowledge of sustainable development!
