Julia talks about her veterinary internship in South Africa: an immersion in the wildlife

WHAT WERE YOUR ON-SITE MISSIONS?

On site, as an intern, I took on the role of “veterinary nurse”. I vaccinated, vermifuged, administered injections and disinfected the wounds of various animals, such as dogs, cats, horses, goats and sheep.

WHAT HAS THIS INTERNSHIP GIVEN ME?

This internship allowed me to develop an open mind and different from the one you can have in Europe. It made me aware of the chance we have here and opened me up to a different culture as well as a different way of life.

DO I RECOMMEND THIS PROJECT?

I would recommend this internship to pre-veterinarians. As a third-year veterinary school student, this internship enabled me to put into practice the knowledge I had already acquired. Although it didn't provide me with any new technical skills, it did offer me the opportunity to apply my know-how in a contextually concrete way and be useful to animals. It's anenriching experience that has enabled me to understand theimportance of our role, even in the absence of new technical learning.

...AND REAL STEP?

Yes, I was well supported throughout the process, which was very reassuring.
