Marine Conservation in Mozambique: Laura's extraordinary adventure

WHAT MISSIONS WERE ENTRUSTED TO US ON SITE?

I was assigned the following tasks on site:

  • I took an inventory of the fish on my dives.
  • I took photos to identify the whale sharks.
  • After each dive or sea outing, I took a census of the species observed.
  • I identified the whale sharks by comparing them with previously recorded individuals.
  • I've drawn up a monthly inventory of dives and species observed to keep track.
  • In the case of seahorses, I identify them by photo.
  • I watched videos from underwater cameras to identify the activity of certain species in our absence, notably manta rays.
  • During whale season (although only once unsuccessfully), I watched and counted whales from the shore.

WHAT THIS INTERNSHIP HAS GIVEN ME:

This internship has given me both personal and professional benefits. On a personal level, I was able to achieve several goals, including obtaining my diving diplomas, improving my diving skills, and discovering the exciting field of marine biology in a relaxed atmosphere.

I had the opportunity to meet remarkable individuals and immerse myself in the local culture, while learning to surf, among other enriching experiences.

Professionally, I have gained valuable knowledge of marine biology, including various species through in-depth presentations. I have also developed the ability to recognize around 80 fish underwater, which is a significant asset on my CV for future opportunities in the field of marine biology.

DO I RECOMMEND THIS PROJECT?

Do I recommend this project? Absolutely! It was simply extraordinary. The diving environment was incredible, with sharks, mantas, turtles and even whales in the right season. The temperatures were perfect, the people and atmosphere were incredible, and the food was excellent. It was a really interesting project.

...AND REAL STEP?

I would recommend Real Step because they provided me with great support before I left. They were very attentive and available during the project. I'd like to thank the team for their friendliness and responsiveness.
