Women demanded new rights such as social and economic equality and proportional representation in government.
Since 2015, Tham Maya Thapa, one of three female members of Nepal's federal government, Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens, has been responsible for finding ways to overcome traditional and patriarchal mindsets in society.
However, even with new laws, mentalities don't change overnight. Nepalese society finds it hard to accept that women are on the same level as men. This is why treatment such as exclusion during menstruation is accepted, and sexual harassment and discrimination often go unpunished.
The women's empowerment project aims to generate income for marginalized women in rural Nepal. Essentially, organic farming methods for local trade are promoted. Empowering women to become entrepreneurs is the main thrust of the program. Partner associations are expected to take on 5,000 women over the next five years.
To achieve real equality between men and women, the first step is to socially and economically emancipate women.
Our program hopes to meet women's needs by boosting their confidence, imparting skills and providing a safe environment.
