Chloé's internship in marine biology and protection in Tenerife

WHICH ASSIGNMENTS WERE ENTRUSTED TO US ON SITE?

We were given several assignments:

Three times a week, I went sea-sighting (pilot whales, dolphins, turtles, etc.). During these outings, I had to collect several types of data: throughout the boat trip, I had to note down every action I carried out, like in a logbook (waste collection, observation, weather changes, etc.).

When observing animals, I had to note down information on their behavior, the number of individuals observed, etc. Some of us were also at the front of the boat to spot animals.

After each outing, the data had to be entered into the computer, and then the photos had to be sorted to group together the same animals and determine whether they had been seen before.

The rest of the week, I participated in beach and park clean-ups. As an intern, I also had to prepare presentations and take tests.

WHAT I GAINED FROM THIS INTERNSHIP

I was able to develop my knowledge of the marine species present in Tenerife, their behavior, the threats they face and the importance of protecting them. In addition to this theoretical knowledge, I have deepened my practical skills, particularly in ridge recognition, data processing and observation at sea. I was also able to improve my oral skills, both during presentations in English to the group and during discussions with the other participants.

The project also gave me a lot of personal satisfaction: I met a lot of people, improved my English and my openness to others, and learned to live in a community.

WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS PROJECT?

I highly recommend this project because, as well as providing me with knowledge and completing my professional file, it enabled me to grow and was very enriching on a human level. I was able to discover the island of Tenerife and enjoy many fantastic experiences with wonderful people!

...AND REAL STEP?

RealStep was there for me every step of the way. I was able to talk to several members of the team, who were all attentive to my requests and quickly answered my questions. This really made me feel at ease about the project.
